The Spokesmen is a Christian vocal band formed in 1963, blending folk-pop harmonies with the gospel message that inspired a generation during a time of social and spiritual upheaval. Originating in St. Petersburg, Florida, the band drew from the talents of young musicians united by faith in Jesus Christ and a passion for evangelizing others in their generation through song.

Founding and Early Years (1963-1969):
The band began as an informal ensemble of high school teenagers, where Mike Otto and his cousin, Dave Shipley, joined up with brothers Bruce and Rod Lynam. Honing their sound in “Christian Youth Ranches” and local outreach events, they emphasized acoustic-driven melodies with lyrics focused on redemption, truth, and everyday Christian life issues. Expanding their lineup to include Dick Hill, Bruce Porter and Don Smith, their award-winning debut album, Speak Out (1969), captured this spirit with tracks like the anthemic "Looking Through His Eyes" and introspective "Ask Him Why," establishing them as alternative voices for young believers.

Growth and Peak (1970-1973):
Expanding their lineup to include Jim Best, Ken Bissinger, Rich Cunningham, Phil Engelman, Ken Weldon and others, The Spokesmen toured high schools, college campuses, churches, youth rallies, and various other venues across the country, playing to more than 100,000 people every year. Albums Free (1972) and Knowing/Caring (1973) showcased a maturing sound that featured a combination of poignant lyrics and lush harmonies on top of instrumental arrangements provided by Nashville’s top studio musicians (“The Nashville A-Team”).

Legacy and Hiatus (1974 Onward):
By the mid-1970s, members pursued individual paths—ministry, family, and careers—leading to a quiet disbandment. Their music preceded the “Jesus Movement” and pioneered what would later become the “Contemporary Christian Music” genre, influencing later Christian artists while remaining cherished in underground circles. Several members from the classic lineup era have passed (Don Smith, Dave Shipley, Luis Rodriguez and Ken Bissinger), but the sound of their harmonies and gospel presentations echoes on.

Resurgence (2026-Present):
The Spokesmen are returning, with their three original albums remastered and finally available again on all major platforms. In time, a contemporary lineup of new, like-minded vocalists and musicians will be introduced. New songs are coming, including some written but never published by the original band members. There are plans for tours at churches, schools and other venues, as God opens doors. The focus remains on a clear presentation of God’s plan of salvation, now offered to a new generation, and encouragement for Christians, with new recordings to come that blend the original spirit with modern compositions.
